  • La Villita Fiesta de Mayo

    On the evening of May 4th, 2007, in the heart of the Midwest’s Mexican Community, Plaza Garibaldi, becomes the entrance to the City of Chicago’s authentic Cinco de Mayo festival. This colorful, unique, three-day event, the first of the warm weather season, is expected to draw more than 25,000 Mexican-Americans.

    Cinco de Mayo’s houses a Main Stage, row after row of picnic style seating and a Healthy Lifestyle Area. A wide variety of authentic Mexican food, beer and soft drinks, and an interesting and varied selection of Mexican and Old World arts and crafts surround the main stage area. Families are encouraged to bring their young children to the event’s elaborate carnival that is in full operation throughout the event.

    The main draw of this colorful and lively event is the music. Cinco de Mayo features more than 30 entertainment acts throughout the festival’s three days. Featured music will cover all spectrums of Mexican music including Tejano, Merengue, Mariachi, Reggaeton and more.

Saturday, May 5th

  • 2:00 pm Poland on the Pier Celebrate Polish constitution day at Navy Pier. Enjoy an afternoon of performances by top international musicians as well as local dance and music ensembles, traditional Polish cuisine, folk arts and crafts, children’s area with art and theater workshops. Free shuttle bus from Parade on Columbus drive to Navy Pier.
  • 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Kids and Kites Festival on front lawn of the Museum of Science and Industry. Not a music event, but sounds like fun anyhow.

  • 6:30 pm Jack Callahan and James Conway at the Welles Park gazebo. Traditional Irish music. Part of the Chicago Park District, Concerts in the Park series.

Wednesday, May 30th – Saturday, June 2nd

  • Chicago Turkish Festival Without leaving the comfort of Daley Plaza, visitors will vividly experience Istanbul and various regions of Turkey together with the participants from Turkey and Turkish-Americans living in the culturally diverse community of Chicago. Visitors will be able to browse and buy Turkish products, souvenirs and handicrafts, find travel information, participate in activities for children and view many authentic demonstrations and performances.

  • Lincoln Square May Fest The annual May Fest is a celebration of spring, complete with Maypole, traditional German food, and plenty of family-friendly fun

  • Chicago Gospel Music Festival We’ve gone to the performance on Friday evening for the last two years and it is one of favorite events of the year. It is very family friendly, the Pritzger Pavillion is wonderful and of course the music is amazing.

  • Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival This music festival is just three blocks from our house. It isn’t especially geared towards kids. We did take our older daughter last year when she was just 1 year old. We kept her in a backpack carrier and there were other children there as well.

  • 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Art Therapy Connection Chalk Festival at Oz Park. There are music, events and activities. They say to bring a picnic.

  • 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Ravenswood Community Care Fair They say, features artisans displaying jewelry, pottery, fiber arts, handmade books, and glass creations. Children’s activities include crafts and games, a playground structure and jumping jack, live music, and more.

Sunday, June 3rd

  • 3:00 pm The Terrible Twos at Schubas
  • 12:00 pm Audubon Family Fun Fair at 3500 N. Hoyne. Admission is $5 which includes all entertainment, some games, ballloon animals.

  • Chicago Blues Festival in Grant Park. I went last year with my daughter and we both had a lot of fun. Great music, big crowds, it’s Chicago!

Friday, June 8th

  • 1:00 pm Putumayo Kids Concert at BeByeBaby in Lakeview. It looks like this is part of the same tour as the show the following day at the Brookfield Zoo, only this is walking distance from my house.
  • 2:00 and 4:00 pm Od Tapo Imi at Millennium Park Sing, dance, chant, and play in a cultural playground as Od Tapo Imi takes the Family Fun Performance Stage as part of Millennium Park’s Family Fun Festival.

Saturday, June 9th

  • 11:00 am Erin Flynn and Lenny Marsh at the Notebaert Nature Museum Cicada Sing-Along with songs and games all about the 17-year cicadas set to emerge in Chicago this summer. Children will build their own instrument to sing like cicadas and learn about the lives of these fascinating creatures. This program is free for children of all ages and their caregivers.
  • 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm Sharp Cookies at Millennium Park
  • 11:00 am Asheba will be singing Happy Birthday to Affie Elephant at the Brookfield Zoo. He will be at the zoo to promote the CD release of Putumayo Kids’ Presents “Animal Playground.” Copies will be available for sale and Asheba will autograph CDs for all his fans.
  • 9:30 am – 12:00 pm Joel Frankel at a very expensive event at the Field Museum called “Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet“. Their discount price for a family of five is $165. Eeks!

  • July 13-15 Pitchfork Music Festival at Union Park. Children under the age of 10 are free when accompanied by an adult. Pitchfork is one of the hottest independent music festivals in the country featuring artists from around the world.

Grant Park Chorus Director Christopher Bell will host the event which will feature guests from the Old Town School of Folk Music including Ella Jenkins, Robbie Fulks and Mariachi Perla de Mexico. Also performing, the Old Town Band with Tony Dale on drums, Gregg Ostrom on guitar, Alton Smith on piano and Jimmy Tomasello on bass as well as the Old Town Singers with Tisa Batchelder, Bill Brickey, Kathy Cowan, Chris Kastle, Elaine Moore, Rita Ruby, Barb Silverman, and Robert Tenges.
